Daeva
Daeva
In this horrifying production, the artist has incorporated an existing window and utility boxes into a wall painting. The connection with the environment is unavoidable; this particular piece of art could not exist anywhere else.
To reinforce the sense of place in this photograph, I’ve included the curb at the bottom and a receding wall on the right.
At first glance, the artist appears to be describing this person as a “daeva”, a nasty supernatural being. But to me she appears to be a victim of technology, her head shrouded by machinery, her lifeblood stolen and manipulated by mechanical forces. So perhaps the daeva is technology itself.
